Federal Day of Mourning Statement Addresses Health and Safety in the Workplace

On April 28, Hon. Patty Hajdu, Minister of Jobs and Families, and Hon. John Zerucelli, Secretary of State (Labour), issued a joint statement for the National Day of Mourning. Indigenous Services Canada and Sturgeon Lake First Nation Open Birthing and Childrearing Lodge

Indigenous Services Canada, along with Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation, inaugurated the Shirley Bighead Nihtāwiki and Ohpikihāwasowin Birthing and Childrearing Lodge on April 29 in Saskatchewan. The federal government invested over $20 million in facility construction, operations, policy development, and programming, with an ongoing annual commitment of more than $683,000 to support birth-related services. The lodge enables mothers to give birth closer to home in a culturally appropriate setting, aligning clinical care with Cree traditions and community preferences.
