Government of Canada Invests $127 Million in Aspect Biosystems and Providence Health Care to Boost Biomanufacturing and Life Sciences
On April 2, Minister Mélanie Joly announced a combined $127 million from the Strategic Response Fund to support Aspect Biosystems’ and Providence Health Care's life sciences projects in Vancouver. The federal government’s partnership with Aspect Biosystems will anchor commercial-scale bioprinted tissue therapeutics manufacturing, maintaining 117 jobs and creating 283 new positions, plus 268 student co-op slots. Providence Health Care’s innovation hub will spur clinical research and technology incubation, maintaining over 6,600 jobs and creating 768 new positions, with 597 co-op roles. The funding is part of Canada’s plan to reinforce health emergency resilience and accelerate commercialization of health innovations, leveraging partnerships with Novo Nordisk and other stakeholders.

Expansion of Mental Health and Substance Use Support for Ontario Frontline Workers
On April 1, Honourable Eleanor Olszewski announced a $15 million federal-provincial funding agreement to expand Runnymede Healthcare Centre and establish Ontario’s first Post-Traumatic Stress Injury (PTSI) Centre of Excellence. The initiative will construct two new facilities in the Greater Toronto Area, providing crisis, outpatient, residential, and virtual care for frontline workers. This model leverages Runnymede’s expertise and aims to improve accessibility of specialized mental health treatment for health professionals across the province.

Vaccine Impact Assistance Program (VIAP) Transitioned to Public Health Agency of Canada Administration
Minister Marjorie Michel announced on March 31 that the Vaccine Impact Assistance Program (formerly the Vaccine Injury Support Program) will be administered directly by PHAC from April 1. VIAP provides financial support to individuals affected by serious injury post-vaccination with Health Canada authorized vaccines, except Quebec residents. The program intends to address application backlogs and improve the transparency of the claims process, utilizing lessons from previous models and harmonization with international programs.

Federal Funding Strengthens Oral Health Care Access in Quebec Through Université Laval Projects
Jean-Yves Duclos and Steeve Lavoie, on behalf of Minister Marjorie Michel, announced over $3.8 million for three Oral Health Access Fund projects at Université Laval. The initiatives include new social dentistry internships, training in underserved areas, and increased student engagement with CDCP eligible patients. Quebec now reports 1.7 million residents covered under the CDCP, with more than a million already accessing participating providers. The CDCP renewal period is April 15 to June 1, 2026.

Grand Challenges Canada Receives $200 Million Renewal for Global Health Innovation
On March 27, Secretary of State (International Development) Randeep Sarai announced a $200 million federal contribution to Grand Challenges Canada, supporting health innovations including portable X-ray diagnostics and other healthcare technologies. Grand Challenges Canada has facilitated over 1,600 innovations globally, mobilizing additional partner funding. Nearly 400 Canadian innovations have been backed, with continued collaboration expected through global partnerships and export opportunities.

Canadian Dental Care Plan Renewal Season Opens April 15
Minister Patty Hajdu issued guidance that renewal enrollment for the Canadian Dental Care Plan will run from April 15 to June 1, 2026. Eligible residents must file tax returns and attest to income and insurance criteria. Renewals maintain uninterrupted coverage for over six million Canadians enrolled in the CDCP.
