Commission proposes European Day in Remembrance of Victims of Accidents at Work

On 6 August 2026, Executive Vice-President Mînzatu issued a statement proposing the establishment of a European Day in Remembrance of Victims of Accidents at Work, to be observed annually on 8 August. The proposal comes ahead of the 70th anniversary of the Marcinelle tragedy in Belgium, where 262 workers died in 1956. The Commission notes that over 3,000 workers die annually in the EU due to workplace accidents, while more than 170,000 deaths are attributed to work-related illness. The initiative is linked to ongoing EU occupational health and safety efforts and the existing EU strategic framework. The Commission highlights the relevance for all sectors, including healthcare, given the focus on workplace risk prevention, and references the priority to update rules on hazardous chemicals affecting cancer, reproductive, and respiratory health.
