Commission unveils EU anti-poverty strategy and disability rights package
On 5 May 2026, the Commission presented a comprehensive package aimed at eradicating poverty and advancing the rights of persons with disabilities across the EU. The measures include the first-ever EU anti-poverty strategy to end poverty by 2050, a proposal for a Council Recommendation on fighting housing exclusion, and reinforced strategies for child poverty and disability inclusion. The package responds to current challenges such as a housing crisis, labour market barriers, and persistent poverty rates, particularly among children and persons with disabilities. President Ursula von der Leyen and Executive Vice-President Roxana Mînzatu stressed the collective responsibility to address these issues. The communication also sets out the rollout of European Disability and Child Guarantee Cards to improve access to services and rights.

Commission details strategy enhancements for rights of persons with disabilities to 2030
On 5 May 2026, the Commission published a Q&A on the enhanced Strategy for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities 2021–2030. The update addresses persistent barriers, the need for better crisis preparedness, and opportunities and risks related to AI. Notable progress includes the European Disability Card, the AccessibleEU resource centre, and reinforced inclusion in EU funding. The revised strategy focuses on tangible improvements for daily life, labour market inclusion, assistive technology, and global actions, including Ukraine’s reconstruction.
Commission answers on anti-poverty package implementation and scope
The Commission released additional information on 5 May 2026 regarding its anti-poverty package, which aims to lift at least 15 million people out of poverty by 2030. The Q&A document details targeted actions for vulnerable groups, including children, single parents, the unemployed, and persons with disabilities, and outlines investment levels required for significant impact. It covers recommendations for social services, governance, and funding, as well as the strengthened European Child Guarantee and the proposed Council Recommendation on housing exclusion.
Commission greenlights Austria’s €325 million payment under NextGenerationEU for health and digital investments
On 6 May 2026, the Commission gave a positive assessment of Austria's fourth payment request under the Recovery and Resilience Facility, totalling €325 million. The disbursement covers milestones in green transition, primary health care, digital infrastructure, and innovation. Healthcare-related measures include funding for 155 primary health care centres and the wider rollout of digital research infrastructure. Austria has now fulfilled 89% of its plan’s milestones. The payment awaits Council Economic and Financial Committee opinion.

Uniform procedures for medical device conformity assessment introduced
Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2026/977 of 4 May 2026 establishes uniform quality management and procedural requirements for notified bodies under Regulations (EU) 2017/745 and 2017/746. The regulation standardises quotation practices, assessment timelines, and re-certification processes for medical and in vitro diagnostic devices. Key provisions include maximum assessment durations, increased transparency of costs, and harmonised re-certification documentation. The rules will apply from 25 February 2027, with transitional arrangements for existing agreements.
Commission Recommendation sets EU-wide framework for age verification technologies
Commission Recommendation (EU) 2026/1035 of 29 April 2026, published 8 May 2026, establishes a common framework for age verification technologies across the EU. The Recommendation targets privacy-preserving, interoperable digital proof-of-age solutions, notably for protecting minors online, and calls for deployment by end-2026. It links to the Digital Services Act and eID regulations and outlines governance for trusted providers and technical standards.
