Commission, WHO, and UNICEF highlight two decades of vaccination impact in Europe
The European Commission, the WHO Regional Office for Europe, and UNICEF Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia issued a joint statement marking the 20th European Immunisation Week. Commissioner for Health and Animal Welfare Olivér Várhelyi, WHO Regional Director Dr Hans Henri P. Kluge, and UNICEF Regional Director Regina De Dominicis underscored advances in vaccine coverage and public health since 2007, citing dramatic reductions in rubella, diphtheria, and mumps. The statement noted the region's status as polio-free since 2002 and near elimination of measles and rubella. The Commission referenced ongoing investment in immunisation programmes and collaborative efforts with global partners. Recent declines in vaccination rates and outbreaks were attributed to misinformation and gaps in health systems. The statement called for reinforced national and regional immunisation programmes and sustained leadership to maintain progress.
