Education, Youth, Culture and Sport Council to address mental health in sport
The Education, Youth, Culture and Sport Council will convene on 12 May 2026 in Brussels, with EU ministers for culture, audiovisual, media, and sport. Among the agenda items, ministers are set to discuss mental health in sport, a subject with implications for youth wellbeing and the broader health policy landscape. The Council will also review the EU’s work plan for culture for 2027-2030 and examine the intersection of sport tourism and sustainable development.

SANT considers medical device rule simplification and Beating Cancer Plan
The Committee on Public Health (SANT) met on 14 April 2026 in Brussels. Rapporteur Vlad Vasile-Voiculescu presented the draft report on 'Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan' (2025/2139(INI)), and the committee reported on its recent mission to Cyprus regarding cancer care. Commissioner Olivér Várhelyi briefed members on the proposal to amend Regulations (EU) 2017/745 and 2017/746 to simplify rules for medical devices and in vitro diagnostic devices (COM(2025)1023; 2025/0404(COD); Rapporteur: Oliver Schenk). The agenda also included a presentation on the European Medicines Agency’s role in expert panels for medical devices.
EMPL discusses psychosocial risks and gender dimension in workplace health
At its 15 April 2026 session, the Employment and Social Affairs Committee (EMPL) considered the draft report on 'Psychosocial risks, stress and mental health at work' (2026/2023(INL)), with rapporteur Estelle Ceulemans. The session addressed the gender dimension of occupational health, noting that exposure and vulnerability differ among groups. The committee also reviewed draft opinions on budgetary frameworks and the implementation of the Youth Guarantee.
FEMM holds structured dialogue on Gender Equality Strategy and pay transparency
On 14 April 2026, the Committee on Women's Rights and Gender Equality (FEMM) held an exchange with Commissioner Hadja Lahbib, focusing on the Gender Equality Strategy. The committee discussed EU-wide guidelines on gender-neutral job evaluation under Article 4 of Directive 2023/970 on pay transparency. Presentations were given by Pinuccia Contino, DG JUST, and Elena Anchevska, EIGE. FEMM also received reports on recent committee missions abroad and reviewed the activities of the Gender Mainstreaming Network.
SANT issues draft opinion on psychosocial risks in the healthcare sector
On 14 April 2026, SANT published its draft opinion on 'Psychosocial risks, stress and mental health at work' (PE787.021v01-00; Rapporteur: Irena Joveva) for EMPL. The opinion addresses high rates of depression and violence among healthcare workers, calls for sector-specific prevention such as safe staffing and post-incident support, and recognises the impact of digitalisation on working conditions. It also highlights the need for better data collection and cross-sectoral cooperation to monitor psychosocial risks.
EMPL press release: MEPs approve new chemical exposure limits and protection for workers
On 15 April 2026, EMPL issued a press release after its committee vote approving the sixth revision of the carcinogens, mutagens and reprotoxic substances directive (CMRD). The revision introduces new exposure limits for cobalt and its compounds, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, 1,4-dioxane, and isoprene, and adds welding fumes to the directive. The committee mandates provision of personal protective equipment, regular breaks for those using it, and enhanced measures for firefighters. SMEs and gender mainstreaming are also addressed. Rapporteur Liesbet Sommen (EPP, BE) described the revision as a step towards improved worker protection. The negotiating mandate awaits plenary endorsement.
EMPL adopts report amending Directive 2004/37/EC on occupational exposure limits
On 17 April 2026, EMPL adopted its report on amending Directive 2004/37/EC regarding the addition of substances and setting limit values in its Annexes (A-10-2026-0100; Rapporteur: Liesbet Sommen). The report proposes new binding occupational exposure limits for cobalt, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, isoprene, and 1,4-dioxane, as well as stricter rules for welding fumes. It incorporates gender considerations, SME support, and enhanced provisions for personal protective equipment. The report reflects input from the Advisory Committee on Safety and Health at Work and various stakeholders.
