Federal Government Earmarks $97 Million for Electric Vehicle Infrastructure and Freight Decarbonization

Natural Resources Canada, joined by the Ministers of Transport and Environment, on February 10 detailed more than $97 million in allocations under the national Automotive Strategy. The Zero Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program receives $84.4 million for 8,000 new EV chargers, with $5.7 million committed through the Green Freight Program to support fleet repowering and adoption of low-carbon vehicles. These awards are part of the larger $1.5-billion Charging and Hydrogen Refuelling Infrastructure Initiative administered via the Canada Infrastructure Bank. An additional $7.2 million targets education and awareness efforts to spur EV adoption, including Indigenous-led programs. This strategy includes a new National Charging Infrastructure Strategy aimed at attracting private-sector investment in Canada's EV supply chain.

CBSA Operations Yield Criminal Prosecutions and Disruptions of Irregular Trade

Recent enforcement activities by the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) resulted in the interception of a shipment identified as child sexual abuse material at Hamilton International Airport and the arrest of a Kingston resident under multiple Criminal Code offences. In a separate case, CBSA intelligence facilitated an identity fraud prosecution handled by the Cornwall RCMP against U.S. citizen Peter Eliot Granovetter, who was convicted on multiple charges for identity fraud, document forgery, and unlawful possession of Canadian citizenship documents and sentenced to one year of incarceration with additional restrictions. Both actions reflect ongoing CBSA collaboration with law enforcement and highlight continuing efforts to secure Canadian borders against criminal activity.

Regional Defence Funding for Atlantic Canada Accelerator Supporting Marine and Aerospace SMEs

The Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency announced nearly $1 million in new funding for Vimy Forge Corp. under the Regional Defence Investment Initiative. The Fredericton-based innovation accelerator will support a cohort of ten early-stage defence-sector SMEs, including participants from New Brunswick, Ontario, British Columbia, and Quebec. The program aims to increase mentorship, industry engagement, and development of technological capabilities in critical domains such as marine and aerospace systems.

Canada-Pakistan Move Forward on Agri-Trade and Investment Negotiations

On February 9, Minister of International Trade Maninder Sidhu and Pakistan’s Minister for Commerce held discussions regarding bilateral trade. The parties confirmed the arrival of the first Canadian canola shipment to Karachi Port and committed to advancing trade in agriculture, clean energy, and mining, while exploring a foreign investment promotion and protection agreement. Pakistani export strengths in textiles and related manufacturing were identified as priority growth areas.

Statistics Canada: International Arrivals Drop 8.4% Annually in January, Aircraft Movements Data Released

StatsCan’s early indicator report (February 11) registered a preliminary January total of 4.2 million international arrivals to Canada via air and automobile, representing an 8.4% year-over-year decrease. Supplementary data was made available for weekly aircraft movements for the period of January 24 to 30, 2026.

Applications Open for Key Crown Corporation Board Roles in Infrastructure and Transport

Housing, Infrastructure and Communities Canada announced new application rounds for Board of Director positions at the Canada Infrastructure Bank, Canada Lands Company, Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, Jacques Cartier and Champlain Bridges Incorporated, and Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority. Submissions are open through March 9 for these Governor in Council-appointments, with roles expected to influence infrastructure policies across major freight and passenger networks, as well as the transformation of Build Canada Homes into an arm’s-length entity.
