- House Committee to review Indo-Pacific Strategy and consider draft Africa Strategy report: On May 26, the Foreign Affairs and International Development Committee will review Canada’s Indo-Pacific Strategy with academics and think tank representatives from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., then move in camera to consider the draft report on Canada’s Africa Strategy.
- International Trade Committee to study Canada–Taiwan trade cooperation and CUSMA review: On May 26, the International Trade Committee will meet from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. to receive testimony from the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Canada on trade-related cooperation and from business groups regarding the forthcoming CUSMA review.
- Procedure and House Affairs Committee studies Bill C-25 regarding electoral districts and Canada Elections Act amendments: The Procedure and House Affairs Committee meets May 26 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. to hear legal and academic witnesses, including Elections Canada, on proposed electoral law and district name changes contained in Bill C-25.
- Senate Committee reviews CUSMA and North American trade relations: On May 27, the Senate Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade will hear from Laura Dawson and Steve Verheul, among others, on CUSMA and trade relations with the United States and Mexico.
- Senate Committee to hold hearing on Sudan and Canada's humanitarian engagement: On May 28, the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade, with officials from Global Affairs Canada, Project Ploughshares, World Food Programme and World Vision, will discuss the current situation in Sudan and associated humanitarian efforts.

Secretary of State Sarai strengthens international development partnerships during United Kingdom and Nigeria visit
From May 18 to 22, Secretary of State Randeep Sarai traveled to the United Kingdom and Nigeria, completing a round of engagements intended to modernize Canada’s development partnerships. In Nigeria, Secretary Sarai announced more than $30 million in humanitarian and development funding for initiatives impacting health systems, women’s entrepreneurship, economic growth, digital resilience, and access to justice across West Africa. He referenced the 6th Canada–Africa Business Conference planned for June 24-25, 2026 in Lagos, set to convene senior Canadian and Nigerian decision-makers. The agenda addressed cooperation in clean energy, infrastructure, and agri-food, and included strategic meetings with federal and state leaders. Sarai’s London agenda included participation in the Global Partnerships Conference, where Canada’s developmental vision and backing for the Equality Fund—alongside Germany’s new financial contribution—were discussed.

Canada launches multi-year development projects across West Africa
Global Affairs Canada detailed allocations announced by Secretary of State Sarai in Nigeria: the 2X Ignite Africa Warehousing Facility ($13 million over eight years) will help expand capital access for women-led enterprises, the Humanitarian Assistance Fund for Nigeria ($11.7 million) supports health and emergency relief, and a World Bank technical partnership ($2.5 million) aids Nigeria’s health reforms. Additional projects include funding for climate finance and circular economy research, counter-disinformation efforts led by Paradigm Initiative Nigeria, and the Canada-Nigeria Justice Cooperation Project, which targets improved legal guidelines for survivors of violence. Combined, the initiatives provide technical assistance, capacity building, and finance mechanisms in Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Nigeria, and Senegal, with an explicit focus on small and medium enterprise scaling, digital tools, and cross-border research.

Canadian and Baltic foreign ministers coordinate on security, economic ties, and support for Ukraine
On May 20 in Tallinn, Minister of Foreign Affairs Anita Anand joined Baltic counterparts for the fourth Canada–Baltics "3+1" Foreign Ministers’ Meeting. Ministers named Russia as the primary security threat to the Euro-Atlantic region and recommitted to NATO’s collective defence and Canada’s leadership of the Multinational Brigade in Latvia. They addressed hybrid threats, sanctions, and measures to constrain Russia’s war financing, and discussed collaboration on NATO resilience in the Arctic, Baltic, and North Atlantic. The communique also referenced growing trade with the Baltics under CETA, coordination on defence industrial capacity via instruments like DSRB, and preparations for the autumn EU–Canada Summit. They cited the strategic value of Ukraine’s reconstruction and the importance of accountability mechanisms for war-related abuses.

Minister Anand advances bilateral relations during Baltic tour
Minister Anand’s official visit to Latvia, Estonia, and Lithuania (May 19–22) focused on expanding defence industrial collaborations, supporting the NATO Multinational Brigade in Latvia, and promoting bilateral investment. In Riga on May 19, Anand met with her Latvian counterpart Baiba Braže and President Edgars Rinkēvičs, reiterating the role of Canadian Armed Forces deployments and the renewal of Operation REASSURANCE to 2029. During discussions with Estonia’s Margus Tsahkna and Lithuania’s Kęstutis Budrys, Anand invited Baltic leaders to a Toronto conference on returning Ukrainian prisoners of war, linked Canada’s Arctic investments to NATO priorities, cited opportunities for Canadian defence manufacturers given recent investments in Estonia, and discussed engaging Baltic and EU partners in defence supply chain collaboration and nuclear energy, as well as preparations for the July NATO Summit in Ankara.

Joint Statement on Arctic Security released by North American and Nordic Allies
On May 22, Canada, the United States, and governments of Denmark (with Greenland and the Faroe Islands), Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden issued a joint Arctic security statement in Helsingborg, Sweden. The statement announced coordinated action to address Russian military activity and China’s rising strategic interest in the region. It detailed commitments to enhance military presence, improve surveillance, conduct joint training, and support additional NATO activities such as Arctic Sentry and Air Policing in Iceland. Allies have also directed experts to coordinate on research security, investment screening, and critical infrastructure. The statement cited economic development as integral to regional stability and referenced ongoing NORAD modernization.

Minister Anand to host bilateral meeting with China’s Foreign Affairs Minister
Global Affairs Canada confirmed that Minister of Foreign Affairs Anita Anand will receive Wang Yi, Director of the Office of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs and Minister of Foreign Affairs of China, on May 28 in Ottawa. This marks the first visit by a Chinese Foreign Minister since 2016. Talks will focus on pragmatic engagement under the Canada–China Strategic Partnership, including trade and investment, global security, and other bilateral matters.

Canada, Australia, and New Zealand issue joint APEC statement on Russia’s war in Ukraine
On May 23, at the APEC Ministerial Responsible for Trade Meeting in Suzhou, China, Canada joined Australia and New Zealand in issuing a joint statement backing APEC’s multilateral trade goals and China’s role as 2026 host. The statement condemned Russia’s continued aggression in Ukraine as detrimental to peace in both the Euro-Atlantic and Indo-Pacific regions and called for a permanent, unconditional ceasefire. The parties articulated their intent to use APEC forums to address the broader economic repercussions stemming from the invasion.

Minister Champagne advances Canada’s financial and economic interests at G7 summit
At the G7 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors meeting in Paris, Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne met global counterparts including French Minister Roland Lescure. Discussions ranged from global imbalances and critical minerals to financial crime prevention and sanctions on Russia. Champagne promoted Canada’s Trade Diversification Strategy and updated on the introduction of Bill C-29 to establish a Financial Crimes Agency. Federal investment supports defence technology and supply chain capacity at Ontario Tech University
On May 19, Parliamentary Secretary Ryan Turnbull, on behalf of Minister Evan Solomon, announced a $5 million investment through FedDev Ontario at Ontario Tech University’s Automotive Centre of Excellence. The project will expand the institution’s capabilities into a domestic defence technology hub, supporting the commercialization of advanced vehicles, aerospace, drone systems, and related defence technologies. The facility will contribute to the resilience of supply chains supporting allied and Canadian procurement and is positioned to support the requirements of both national security and allied military markets.

StatsCan releases March 2026 cross-border travel data
Statistics Canada’s latest data release shows that in March 2026, Canadian-resident return trips from the United States dropped by 6.4% year over year. In contrast, entries into Canada by U.S. residents rose 4.4%.

Secretary of State van Koeverden supports international engagement ahead of FIFA World Cup
