Commission approves €6.1 billion to support Ukraine's air and missile defence and other defence needs
On 10 September 2026, the European Commission approved an additional €6.1 billion for Ukraine to procure defence products, including air and missile defence systems, ammunition, drones, and electronic warfare equipment. The funding forms part of the €90 billion Ukraine Support Loan, established by Regulation (EU) 2026/467, with €28.3 billion allocated to Ukraine's 2026 defence support. The package includes derogations for procuring PAC-3 Patriot missiles and Ukrainian-made drones, and enables purchases via the NATO-coordinated PURL mechanism. Following the agreement by Member States, this decision covers equipment procurements, suppliers, and implementation timelines for Ukraine's defence in 2026. The Commission has already disbursed €8.35 billion in defence funding to Ukraine this year, with further tranches anticipated. Before funds are released, contracts will be reviewed for compliance with Ukraine Support Loan conditions.

Commission presents landmark India trade deal to Council for signature
On 10 September 2026, the European Commission presented its proposals to the Council for the signature and conclusion of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with India. The agreement, when in force, is expected to eliminate or reduce tariffs on 96% of EU goods exports to India and facilitate market access for EU businesses. The deal aims to save approximately €4 billion annually in duties for European products and follows the fast-track procedure initiated by Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič. The Council must authorize the signing and conclusion, after which the European Parliament's consent is required. Parallel ratification procedures are ongoing in India.
A new strategic vision for the outermost regions, strengthening the EU's global reach
On 9 September 2026, the Commission adopted a Communication outlining a new strategic vision for the EU's nine outermost regions, including French Guiana, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Mayotte, Réunion, Saint-Martin (France), the Azores, Madeira (Portugal), and the Canary Islands (Spain). The strategy aims to boost socio-economic development, enhance resilience, and harness geostrategic potential, with four objectives: regional integration, competitiveness, resilience, and social fairness. The accompanying regulatory package proposes targeted adaptations to EU law for these regions in sectors such as agriculture, fisheries, migration, and taxation. The Commission will continue to incorporate the specific needs of the outermost regions into EU policies and sectoral legislation.
Commission approves €400 million German State aid to enhance insulin supply resilience
On 7 September 2026, the European Commission approved a €400 million German State aid measure in favour of Sanofi-Aventis Deutschland GmbH to strengthen the resilience of insulin supply. Under Article 106(2) TFEU and the 2012 SGEI Framework, the aid will compensate Sanofi for providing a service of general economic interest, including building a new insulin factory in Frankfurt-Höchst by 2032 and maintaining supply and stockpiles until 2042. The entrustment act contains safeguards against overcompensation and ensures compliance with procurement rules. The measure is aligned with the objectives of the proposed Critical Medicines Act.

The aid, sourced from the Asylum Migration and Integration Fund and the Border Management and Visa Instrument, will enhance border surveillance, infrastructure, staff deployment, and migrant reception. A joint core group will oversee coordination and disbursement, while operational support from EU agencies will continue.

The proposal aims to reduce administrative burdens by €650 million annually and support strategic goals such as innovation, resilience, and European preference in public spending. The Regulation includes new provisions on security, resilience, and supply chain diversification. The draft will be negotiated by the Parliament and Council.

On 8 September 2026, the Commission presented the European Innovation Act, a proposal designed to address fragmented rules and funding challenges facing European innovators.
