Commission approves €30 million Portuguese State aid for agricultural, fishery and aquaculture companies facing increased fuel and fertiliser prices

On 1 September 2026, the European Commission approved a €30 million State aid scheme for agricultural, fishery, and aquaculture companies in Portugal facing increased fuel and fertiliser prices, attributed to the Middle East crisis. The scheme was evaluated under the Middle East Crisis Temporary State Aid Framework (METSAF), adopted on 29 April 2026. Aid will be distributed in direct grants, calibrated to the rise in agricultural fuel and fertiliser costs, capped at €50,000 per company. Fishery and aquaculture entities may receive €0.10 per litre of marine diesel consumed from 1 April to 30 June 2026. The approval was made under Article 107(3)(c) of the Treaty on the Functioning of the EU and Sections 1 and 2.1 of METSAF. The Commission found the scheme to be necessary, appropriate, and proportionate, with case number SA.124487 published in the State aid register.
