Canada-India Finance Ministers’ Inaugural Economic and Financial Dialogue Concludes
On August 27, Ministers François-Philippe Champagne (Canada) and Nirmala Sitharaman (India) held the first Canada-India Finance Ministers’ Economic and Financial Dialogue. The meeting followed Prime Minister-level commitments to advance a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement by the end of 2026. The ministers discussed macroeconomic conditions, domestic tax stability, and the expansion of bilateral trade targets to CAD 70 billion by 2030. A key outcome was India’s willingness to begin Bilateral Investment Treaty negotiations. The ministers reviewed Canadian pension fund and institutional investor activities in India, with reference to the positive impact of Indian tax relief. Payments modernization—including the use of India’s UPI in Canada—and cross-border payments efficiency were addressed as potential areas of collaboration. Engagement on fintech, remittances, financial stability, and efforts to address financial crime also featured in talks. Follow-up included industry sessions with representatives from Canadian financial services, fintech, infrastructure, and energy sectors, preceding the next dialogue set for 2027.

Minister of Finance and Provincial Counterparts Coordinate Response to U.S. Tariffs
On August 24, Minister François-Philippe Champagne convened provincial and territorial finance ministers to discuss new U.S. tariffs, the suspension of Canada-U.S. trade talks, and countermeasure strategies, including dollar-for-dollar tariffs taking effect September 8. Minister Dominic LeBlanc updated ministers on the suspension of negotiations, focusing on protection of Canadian market access and sovereignty. Canada Advances Interests Ahead of G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors Meeting
Minister François-Philippe Champagne is set to participate in the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors meeting in Asheville, North Carolina, from August 31-September 1. The agenda includes the global economy, sovereign debt architecture, and financial literacy. Minister Champagne will also engage in bilateral meetings and G7 Finance Ministers discussions on the sidelines. These sessions aim to further trade diversification and investment opportunities for Canada, ahead of the G20 Leaders' Summit in December.

The support aims to bolster Quebec startups via crowdfunding matched by government funds, up to $50,000 per project. The funding targets innovative businesses, supporting the launch and growth of digital, technological, and other projects in Quebec’s economy. The program seeks to catalyze additional institutional funding, with SMEs constituting 99.7% of Quebec businesses and contributing half of provincial GDP.
