On July 28, Minister David J. McGuinty hosted engagements in Toronto with representatives from Canadian pension funds, Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC), Export Development Canada (EDC), and defence industry stakeholders. The meetings centered around the progress made under Canada’s Defence Industrial Strategy, which aims to reinforce the country's defence sector through prioritization of Canadian suppliers, innovation, and streamlined procurement. BDC reported supporting 130 small and medium-sized enterprises since launching its $6 billion Defence Platform, nearly doubling its portfolio and approaching $1 billion in total value. Export Development Canada expanded its sector support, providing $2 billion in financing and insurance, including $1.1 billion dispensed to over 60 companies in 2026. Discussions covered opportunities for increased collaboration among pension funds, government, and industry, focusing on strategic dual-use projects and large-scale infrastructure. The gatherings also contribute to preparations for the Canada Investment Summit, which will focus on attracting global investment in nation-building projects.
