Commission launches integrated wildfire risk management strategy

On 24 March 2026, the European Commission presented a new integrated approach to wildfire risk management. The strategy covers prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery, aiming to enhance resilience against escalating wildfire threats across the EU. The Commission outlined measures such as ecosystem-based prevention, expanded EU firefighting resources, and updated risk assessment guidance. A guidance document on Natura 2000 and climate change was also adopted, clarifying how to manage wildfire risks in protected areas. The strategy builds on the Preparedness Union Strategy adopted on 26 March 2025 and includes the expansion of the rescEU firefighting fleet and the establishment of a European firefighting hub in Cyprus.

€34.6 billion in cohesion policy funds reallocated to EU strategic priorities

The Commission announced on 24 March 2026 that Member States had reprogrammed €34.6 billion in 2021-2027 cohesion policy funds toward competitiveness, defence, affordable housing, water resilience, and energy connectivity. The reallocation follows the mid-term review of cohesion policy and covers amendments to 186 national and regional programmes in 25 Member States. Enhanced pre-financing and higher co-financing rates were offered to participating regions, with additional incentives for eastern border regions. The Commission will closely monitor the implementation by managing authorities.

Commission approves €5 billion Danish State aid scheme for offshore wind

On 22 March 2026, the Commission approved a €5 billion Danish scheme under the Clean Industrial Deal State Aid Framework (CISAF) to support the development and operation of two offshore wind farms: Hesselø and North Sea I Mid. The scheme, running for 20 years, is designed as a two-way contract for difference and will contribute to Denmark’s and the EU’s renewable energy targets. The measure is found necessary and proportionate for the net-zero transition and complies with Article 107(3)(c) TFEU.

Commission approves €500 million Luxembourg cleantech manufacturing scheme

On 26 March 2026, the Commission cleared a €500 million Luxembourgish scheme to support clean technology manufacturing capacity, in line with the Clean Industrial Deal. Approved under the CISAF, the measure will support investments in technologies such as solar, wind, batteries, and heat pumps, as well as related critical raw materials. Aid will be granted as direct grants until 31 December 2030 and is open to companies across Luxembourg.

Commission approves French aid for renewable and low-carbon hydrogen production

On 22 March 2026, the Commission approved a French scheme supporting the production of renewable and low-carbon hydrogen, targeting 1 GW of electrolysis capacity. The scheme will award aid through competitive tenders, granting a fixed premium for up to 15 years, for hydrogen sold exclusively for industrial use. It is aligned with the EU Hydrogen Strategy, Clean Industrial Deal, and REPowerEU objectives.

Commission approves €144 million French State aid for HyforSeeds hydrogen project

On 26 March 2026, the Commission approved €144 million in French State aid to support HyforSeeds’ renewable and low-carbon hydrogen production at the LAT Nitrogen site in Haut Rhin. The project will reduce CO2 emissions by at least 70% compared to traditional methods and is expected to replace up to 15% of fossil-based hydrogen in ammonia production. The measure was assessed under Article 107(3)(c) TFEU.

Commission greenlights Latvia's €371 million NextGenerationEU payment

On 25 March 2026, the Commission gave a positive assessment of Latvia's fourth payment request under the Recovery and Resilience Facility, totaling €371 million. Latvia has completed 24 milestones and 17 targets, including measures on energy efficiency, flood risk management, and energy communities. The payment will proceed following the Economic and Financial Committee’s opinion.
