Uncrewed Systems Defence Innovation Secure Hub Established in Quebec

On July 14, the Bureau of Research, Engineering and Advanced Leadership in Innovation and Science (BOREALIS) announced the establishment of the Uncrewed Systems Defence Innovation Secure Hub (UxS DISH) in Mirabel, Quebec. Sponsored by Canadian Joint Forces Command, an Espace Aéro-led consortium—comprising partners like Ministère de l'Économie, de l'Innovation et de l'Énergie (MEIE), CAE, CRIAQ, and ARA Robotics—will receive $29.6 million over two years. The UxS DISH enables collaboration between government, industry, and academia for research, development, testing, and operational integration of autonomous and uncrewed systems. The hub focuses on sensor integration, automation, contested environments, and human-machine teaming across land, air, maritime, and joint domains. Facilities provide secure collaboration and advanced experimentation spaces, including regulated airspace access at YMX Innovation Centre. Initiatives such as the POINT pilot and IDEaS Program further support rapid procurement and operationalization of defence innovations.

Minister McGuinty Announces New Drone Production Consortium

Minister David J. McGuinty on July 14 announced the launch of the UxS DISH facility, led by an Espace Aéro consortium with 30 organizations, following a competitive call for proposals. The hub targets the transition of R&D prototypes into field-ready uncrewed and autonomous systems for the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF). Supported by Canadian Joint Forces Command (CJFC), the initiative creates secure environments for system validation and integration. The establishment builds on prior Maritime DISH pilot achievements and is designed to enhance operational independence, supply chain resilience, and engagement with defence startups and research teams.

Canadian Armed Forces Rebalance Global Operations

On July 17, National Defence announced that the CAF will close Operations KOBOLD (Kosovo), SNOWGOOSE (Cyprus), SOPRANO (South Sudan), and CROCODILE (Democratic Republic of the Congo), while reducing its commitment to Operation CALUMET (Sinai Peninsula) over two years. Personnel assigned to these missions will be redeployed into higher-priority assignments at home and internationally. The adjustment is intended to concentrate resources on defending Canada, supporting Euro-Atlantic stability, and Indo-Pacific engagement. The CAF will continue participating in peace operations via PRESENCE, CALUMET, and JADE, and provide pre-deployment training through the Military Training and Cooperation Program.

HMCS Ville de Québec Departs for Operation REASSURANCE

HMCS Ville de Québec departed Halifax on July 15 to join Standing NATO Maritime Group One (SNMG1) as part of Operation REASSURANCE. The vessel will operate in European waters, contributing to NATO's collective defence, maritime route protection, and persistent deterrence posture until December 2026. Its activities include supporting the maritime segment of the Allied Reaction Force and enhancing interoperability among allied navies.

Canada and Portugal Sign Aeronautical Search and Rescue MOU

Canada and Portugal signed a Memorandum of Understanding on SAR cooperation on July 13. The agreement strengthens operational collaboration and information sharing between Canada’s Department of National Defence and Portugal’s Ministry of National Defence in North Atlantic maritime SAR activities. The MOU coincided with the conclusion of ASAREX 2026 in Ponta Delgada, Azores, which saw SAR professionals from both countries train in challenging maritime conditions and refine coordination procedures.

National Defence Unveils Net-Zero-Emissions-Ready Housing at CFB Edmonton

Minister Eleanor Olszewski announced on July 14 the completion of 36 net-zero-emissions-ready apartments at CFB Edmonton, marking the first delivery under Phase 1 of the Department of National Defence’s national housing program. Led by Canadian Forces Housing Agency, Phase 1 provides over 800 units at nine CAF installations; Phase 2 will expand construction to all 25 CFHA locations. The Edmonton project, valued at $22.5 million and part of a $1.4 billion housing commitment, aims to support CAF recruitment, retention, and quality of life, delivered in partnership with several federal agencies.

Canada Pavilion at Farnborough International Airshow Officially Opens

Minister McGuinty’s Delegation to the United Kingdom for Air Combat Partnership

Minister David J. McGuinty will attend the Farnborough International Airshow July 20–22 in the United Kingdom, including an announcement in London on July 21 regarding Canadian cooperation in advancing air combat capability development. The visit will involve meetings with international defence partners and media access via live stream provided by the UK Ministry of Defence.

CUSMA Advisory Committee Meeting Discusses Defence and Economic Relations

On July 15, Minister Dominic LeBlanc and Martin Moen hosted the Advisory Committee on Canada–U.S. Economic Relations, following the July 1 CUSMA trilateral review. Updates included ongoing sectoral challenges—steel, aluminum, automobiles, and softwood lumber—and discussion of defence-related outcomes from the recent NATO Summit. Kevin Brosseau, Senior Associate Deputy Minister of National Defence, briefed the committee on national defence priorities and Canada's work against fentanyl trafficking.

Federal Support for St. John’s Metro Area Shipbuilding and Marine Technology Businesses

On July 16, Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency announced $975,000 non-repayable investment for bottling optimization at Browning Harvey and $950,000 to support facility expansion and capacity development for Newdock (St. John’s Dockyard Ltd). The allocation aims to improve productivity, expand capacity for larger vessels, and increase resilience amid trade instability. Additional funds assist marine technology firms in market development for Southeast Asia and Europe.

Canada-Mexico Action Plan Advances Security and Maritime Surveillance

Minister Anita Anand announced support for TURQUESA II ($5 million) to promote cooperation among Mexican, Dominican, Guatemalan, and Honduran authorities against human trafficking. Further funding ($7 million) was directed to the Dark Vessel Detection program, utilizing Canadian satellite technology for maritime surveillance in Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Panama, and Peru. Nova Scotia Commissions Four New Airbus H125 Helicopters
