Von der Leyen and NATO Secretary-General Discuss EU Response to Leipzig Attack
On 1 September 2026, President Ursula von der Leyen met with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte following Germany's identification of Russia's involvement in an attempted attack on cargo planes at Leipzig/Halle Airport. Von der Leyen characterised the incident as a military-grade attack conducted by Russian operatives on EU soil and indicated support for Germany. She noted that the European Union was considering additional sanctions and other economic measures through the Single Market to further curtail Russia's capacity to sustain its military activities. The President cited recent payments covering Ukraine's air defences, including funding for PAC-3 Patriot missile systems, and ongoing discussions regarding a new payment request for further military assistance. The statement referenced the FREYA project, aimed at developing European anti-ballistic missile defences, as well as the previously issued €8.5 billion for drones and missiles for Ukraine. The Commission has tabled an €800 billion defence investment plan including €150 billion under the SAFE framework, focused on defence readiness and industrial capacity.
EU Statement on Iran at G20 Finance Ministers Meeting
On 30 August 2026, the European Commission issued a statement in the context of the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors meetings in Asheville, United States. The Commission reiterated calls for Iran to halt its nuclear and ballistic missile programmes and end military support for Russia in the Ukraine conflict. The EU outlined that its sanctions regime aims to restrict Iran's use of the global financial system and warned of potential further measures to ensure security, including the safe transit through the Strait of Hormuz. The Commission welcomed US-led efforts, such as Operation Economic Outcast, to increase economic pressure on Iran. Continued cooperation with the United States and G7 partners was stressed as part of EU strategy to de-escalate tensions and safeguard regional security.

Correction to Dual-Use Items Regulation Published
Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2026/1405, dated 26 June 2026, has been published in the Official Journal (OJ L, 2026-09-01). The act corrects errors present in multiple language versions of Regulation (EU) 2021/821 relating to the definition of nuclear reactors, technical descriptions on vacuum characteristics, and types of metals and filters in dual-use items lists. The corrections concern the Hungarian, Lithuanian, Slovak, Swedish, Dutch, Greek, Slovenian, and Irish language versions. The corrections enter into force twenty days after publication and are applicable across all affected Member States.
