Over $20 Million Allocated to Quebec Aluminum Processors Under Regional Tariff Response Initiative

On May 21, the Government of Canada, through Canada Economic Development for Quebec Regions (CED), confirmed the provision of $20,275,574 in non-repayable contributions to 27 organizations in Quebec’s aluminum sector. This was announced during AluQuébec’s general assembly, with a specific $1,485,000 directed to AluQuébec itself. These funds, delivered under the federal Regional Tariff Response Initiative (RTRI), are intended for projects aimed at productivity improvements, process optimization, and market diversification among businesses affected by U.S. tariffs on Canadian steel, aluminum, and copper, adjusted as of April 6, 2026. CED indicates that the assistance is supporting the retention of roughly 1,775 jobs in several Quebec regions. The RTRI, including a recent $500 million top-up and a new $1 billion Business Development Bank of Canada financing program, is part of a $1.5 billion package targeting liquidity and adaptation requirements. Minister Mélanie Joly stated this approach is designed to strengthen supply chains, seeking to help businesses compete in high-potential sectors such as defense and infrastructure.

Fonderie Lemoltech, based in Princeville, will receive $645,000 to acquire new equipment and launch a marketing strategy to boost productivity and diversify its customer base. Saint-Louis-de-Blandford’s Protomach GML is awarded $203,563 for new technology investment. This funding comes through the Regional Tariff Response Initiative (RTRI), part of a larger federal set of measures including a recent $500 million increase to the RTRI and $1 billion in available financing administered by the Business Development Bank of Canada. Carlos Leitão, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Industry, indicated the support is targeting over 1,700 aluminum processing businesses in Quebec, which collectively generate $11.6 billion in annual sales and sustain 30,000 jobs.
