CRTC Chair Vicky Eatrides details progress and forthcoming action on broadcasting and telecommunications regulation

In remarks delivered at the Departure Festival in Toronto on May 5, CRTC Chairperson Vicky Eatrides provided a wide-ranging update on regulatory modernization in broadcasting, implementation of the Online News Act, and recent telecommunications reforms. Eatrides reported ongoing consultations and upcoming policy decisions on audio content, including a review of Canadian content definitions and the establishment of a centralized content database. The CRTC has implemented new rules, including the establishment of a Commercial Radio News Fund and transitioned radio station licences to an indefinite-term model, reducing administrative burdens for broadcasters. On the audiovisual front, further decisions are expected to support Canadian content discoverability, while a consultation targeting news access on radio and television is scheduled in the coming months. For the Online News Act, the exemption granted to Google, with a $100 million annual contribution through the Canadian Journalism Collective, is now in effect, with funding already distributed to newsrooms. In telecommunications, the Commission finalized decisions on contract notifications and the elimination of extra fees, following amendments to the Telecommunications Act. These moves are intended to increase consumer flexibility and overall competition, with declining wireless service prices reported between 2021 and 2025. Key regulatory developments in both broadcasting and telecommunications—and their associated funding flows—signal significant transition for broadcasters, online platforms, and news organizations.
