Commission Marks Day of Remembrance for Victims of Totalitarian Regimes
On 20 August 2026, Executive Vice-President Virkkunen and Commissioner McGrath issued a statement ahead of the Europe-wide Day of Remembrance of the victims of all totalitarian and authoritarian regimes, observed on 23 August. The statement recalled the anniversary of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact of 1939, referencing the suffering caused by occupation, repression, and violence during and after World War II. The Commissioners honoured the memory of those who endured persecution and stressed the importance of vigilance in defending European values. The statement referenced the Citizens, Equality, Rights and Values programme. The commemoration serves as an annual occasion to reaffirm the EU's commitment to democracy, human rights, and the rule of law.
