Commission greenlights Austria's fourth payment request for €325 million under NextGenerationEU
On 6 May 2026, the European Commission gave a positive assessment to Austria's fourth payment request for €325 million under the Recovery and Resilience Facility, part of NextGenerationEU. The assessment found Austria had completed nine milestones and eight targets outlined in the Council Implementing Decision. Key measures include the installation of 17,800 residential photovoltaic systems and funding for green investments in 13,500 enterprises, as well as digitising cultural objects and expanding digital research infrastructure at universities. The payment request will bring Austria's total funds paid under the Facility to €3.66 billion, covering 92% of the plan's allocated funds. The Economic and Financial Committee now has four weeks to deliver its opinion before the Commission adopts a payment decision.

Commission Recommendation (EU) 2026/1035 establishes EU-wide framework for age verification technologies
On 8 May 2026, Commission Recommendation (EU) 2026/1035 was published in the Official Journal, setting out a common framework for EU age verification solutions. The Recommendation supports harmonisation by urging Member States to deploy privacy-preserving age verification methods, either as standalone apps or integrated into European Digital Identity Wallets. The initiative references Regulation (EU) 2022/2065 (Digital Services Act), Directive 2010/13/EU (Audiovisual Media Services Directive), and Directive 2005/29/EC (Unfair Commercial Practices Directive) to reinforce protection of minors online. Member States are asked to submit implementation plans to the Commission by 30 June 2026.

Education, Youth, Culture and Sport Council to review EU culture work plan for 2027-2030
On 12 May 2026, EU ministers for culture, audiovisual, media, and sport will meet to discuss topics including the EU’s work plan for culture for 2027-2030, sport tourism and sustainable development, and mental health in sport.
Competitiveness Council announces upcoming meeting on internal market and industry
The Competitiveness Council (Internal Market and Industry) is scheduled to convene on 28 May 2026.

CULT committee hosts hearing on audiovisual policy framework and creative freedom
On 5 May 2026, the Committee on Culture and Education (CULT) organised a public hearing titled “The Audiovisual Policy Framework and the Future of Creative Freedom” in Brussels. Speakers included Mark Cole (University of Luxembourg), Adeline Hulin (UNESCO), Marta Krzeptowska (European Producers Club), and Tarik Saleh (Atmo), who discussed regulatory developments, media literacy, and challenges facing European creative industries. LIBE committee press release: Hearing explores age verification techniques for protection of minors online
On 4 May 2026, the LIBE committee issued a press release announcing its hearing on age verification, assurance, and estimation techniques for protecting minors online, scheduled for 6 May 2026. Institutional speakers included Yvo Volman (DG Connect, Commission), Vincent Toubiana (CNIL), and Francisco Pérez Bes (AEPD), with perspectives from academia, civil society, and industry. The hearing follows a November 2025 Parliament resolution calling for an EU-wide minimum age for social media use and stronger measures against cyberbullying.
CULT committee agenda includes European Heritage Label and ECA report on European Schools
