Canada Regains Market Access for Beef Exports to the Dominican Republic

On September 11, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency announced the restoration of Canadian beef and beef product access to the Dominican Republic (DR), ending a ban in effect since 2003 following the initial case of BSE in Canada. The DR's General Directorate of Medicines, Food and Health Products and General Directorate of Livestock conducted an audit of Canada’s beef inspection and confirmed the reliability of its food safety and animal health controls. The lifting of these restrictions permits the export of beef and offal from cattle of all ages. Canada’s negligible BSE risk status supported the reopening, positioning Canadian exporters to compete in the Caribbean market. Federal authorities indicated this move will help producers expand their businesses. Efforts continue to secure additional export markets for Canadian agriculture and agri-food products.

Expanded Regional Tariff Response Initiative for Tariff-Affected Prairies Businesses

Prairies Economic Development Canada announced that Prairies-based small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) can now apply for support under the expanded Regional Tariff Response Initiative (RTRI), which includes up to $3 million in non-repayable support per eligible business. This follows new U.S. tariffs imposed on Canadian goods last month, leading to reciprocal dollar-for-dollar Canadian countermeasures and $7.5 billion in new and enhanced federal supports. The initiative delivers $3.45 billion through regional agencies to manage liquidity, automation, supply chain, and market adaptation challenges for both for-profit and not-for-profit organizations. Funding is earmarked for immediate liquidity pressures (up to $2 million) and market pivot projects (up to $1 million), covering Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba.

Government of Canada Investments Defend Saskatchewan Industries From U.S. Tariffs

On September 8, Ottawa detailed additional supports for Saskatchewan businesses in response to recent U.S. tariffs, with $3.45 billion made available under the expanded RTRI framework. The Honourable Eleanor Olszewski confirmed application intake is now open. Six Saskatchewan-based projects will receive $5.3 million across sectors, including manufacturing and agricultural equipment. Notably, Degelman Industries GP received $1 million for productivity improvements, Saskarc Inc. $1 million for processing and automation, and Seedmaster Manufacturing $596,347 to increase export capacity. Measures are aimed at supporting domestic supply chains, automation, and market diversification.

Atom-Jet Industries Expands Production Capacity With Federal Tariff Support

On September 11 in Brandon, Manitoba, PrairiesCan announced $1 million for Atom-Jet Industries through the Regional Tariff Response Initiative. The funds will allow for a 4,000 sq. ft. facility expansion to bring powder coating and sandblasting functions in-house, reducing costs and improving efficiency. The investment supports expanded direct sales in Canada and Australia, aiming to decrease reliance on U.S.-linked markets in response to new tariffs. The announcement is part of $1.5 billion allocated nationally for tariff-affected SMEs.

Agricultural Clean Technology Program Funds New Indoor Farming Lighting in Alberta

Agriculture and Agri-Food Minister Heath MacDonald, in Calgary on September 8, announced nearly $895,000 for SmartGRO Bioengineering Inc. to develop and test ultra-fast pulsing LED plant lighting for vertical farms. The project uses real-time plant health sensors and AI to optimize lighting inputs, with trials indicating as much as 80% electricity savings at equivalent yields versus standard LEDs. This investment is under the Agricultural Clean Technology Program – Research and Innovation Stream, and supports objectives in the recently announced $3.2 billion National Food Security Strategy.

National Food Security Strategy Brings New Investments in Domestic Food System

Minister Heath MacDonald is scheduled to announce new funding measures in London, Ontario on September 14 under Canada’s National Food Security Strategy. According to pre-announcement information, the investments will be directed toward strengthening domestic food production, expanding processing infrastructure and technologies, and improving affordability and supply reliability for Canadians. Farm Credit Canada representatives will participate, and the announcement will take place at the Arva Flour Mill.

Machine Learning Investment for Vineyard Crop and Disease Management

On September 10 in Toronto, Parliamentary Secretary Karim Bardeesy announced up to $1.69 million for Vivid Machines Inc. under the AgriScience Program for adapting their Vivid XV technology to grape vineyards. The project will expand computer vision and machine learning solutions to predict yields, detect diseases early, and track fruit quality by vine and block. These advanced models are intended to reduce chemical usage and provide real-time, actionable data for growers. The funding supports extending innovation from apple orchards into viticulture.

Minister MacDonald's Southern Alberta Outreach Includes Agri-Food Investment and Processing Visits

Minister Heath MacDonald completed a multi-stop tour across southern Alberta, announcing almost $900,000 for SmartGRO’s clean indoor lighting technology in partnership with Hydragreens vertical farm. Beyond research announcements, the Minister convened with pulse, sugar beet, canola, pea protein, and grain processing operators. Visits included long-standing multi-generational farms, cattle feeders, and the Crossroads public market. Discussions centered on industry opportunities and collaborative approaches between government and agri-food processors to address both challenges and sector resilience.

Canadian Contract Secures Potash Supply to Bangladesh

Minister of International Trade Maninder Sidhu announced a new agreement between the Canadian Commercial Corporation and the Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation for the supply of Canadian potash. Canpotex will export under a government-to-government contract, reinforcing long-term demand from Bangladesh and supporting Canadian fertilizer exporters. This arrangement follows 12 prior contracts since 2014, with over 3.5 million metric tonnes delivered. Canada’s fertilizer exports rose 13.2% to $9 billion last year.

National School Food Program Expansion in Alberta

The Honourable Anna Gainey, Secretary of State (Children and Youth), marked this year’s return to school with an update on the National School Food Program’s Alberta implementation. Federal funding for 2026-27 doubles to $140 million nationally, with $17.6 million going to Alberta under the Canada-Alberta National School Food Program Agreement, supplementing the province’s $20 million for school nutrition. Federal Investment Supports 31 New Great Lakes Ecosystem Projects

On September 9, the Canada Water Agency announced $6.6 million across 31 new projects as part of the $420 million, 10-year Great Lakes Freshwater Ecosystem Initiative. Projects span from soil nutrient management for local farmers (Bay of Quinte Phosphorus Management Plan), to detection and remediation of toxic chemicals (University of Toronto, McMaster University, Queen’s University). Multiple Indigenous communities and conservation authorities will conduct site-specific work on nutrient reduction, shoreline rehabilitation, water quality monitoring, fish habitat restoration, and engagement in Areas of Concern throughout the Great Lakes basin. The initiative also supports dedicated funding to Chiefs of Ontario and Anishinabek Nation for First Nations' participation in stewardship activities.

Canadian International Trade Tribunal Report on Safeguards for Canned and Frozen Vegetables

On September 10, Minister François-Philippe Champagne acknowledged receipt of the Canadian International Trade Tribunal’s report on the global imports of canned and frozen vegetables. The tribunal was tasked with inquiring whether increased imports are causing or threatening to cause serious injury to Canadian producers, and to recommend appropriate measures. The government will review the findings and determine next steps; meanwhile, the existing 10% surtax on imports of canned vegetables remains, effective up to 200 days or until replaced. The report examines affordability and food security impacts, as well as the viability of invoking final safeguard measures.

Farm Product Prices, July 2026

Statistics Canada published monthly provincial farmgate prices for July 2026, covering grains, oilseeds, specialty crops, cattle, hogs, poultry, eggs, and dairy. The data supports benchmarking for commodity and livestock price trends.

Stocks of Principal Field Crops as of July 31, 2026

StatsCan reported that total stocks for wheat, canola, dry peas, lentils, and oats increased compared to July 31 last year, while barley stocks saw a decrease, providing the sector with updated supply statistics for major field crops.

Scarborough Food Company Fined for Importing and Selling Invasive Species

CK Frozen Fish and Food Inc. and its directors were fined $27,000 by the Ontario Court of Justice for importing and commercializing prohibited invasive snakehead fish, a violation of the Invasive Species Act.
