Government of Canada invests $47 million to secure access to essential Canadian Earth observation data

On December 4, Mélanie Joly, Minister of Industry and Minister responsible for Canada Economic Development for Quebec Regions, announced a $47 million investment to ensure continued Canadian access to Earth observation data. The Canadian Space Agency will contract MDA Space to build, test, and launch an additional satellite for the RADARSAT Constellation Mission (RCM). MDA Space has been awarded $44.7 million for procurement of specialized components necessary for the expedited delivery of the new satellite. Three Canadian firms—C-CORE, Kepler, and MDA Space—will receive up to $747,000 each to deliver concept studies for the next-generation Earth observation satellite system within seven months. The RCM provides daily observations of Canadian territory, supporting services such as natural disaster response, sea ice tracking, and supply deliveries to northern communities. The new investments are intended to maintain sovereign satellite data continuity for Arctic security, disaster response, and environmental monitoring. The announcement reflects ongoing federal commitment to advancing synthetic aperture radar (SAR) capabilities and supporting industry innovation in satellite communications.
