NFB Launches Extensive National Indigenous History and Pride Month Programming

The National Film Board of Canada has announced a suite of new releases and online initiatives for National Indigenous History Month and Pride Month, with programming available throughout June. Among the featured works are 'Feather Fall' by Ossie Michelin, revisiting Mi’kmaq territory’s resistance movement; Alanis Obomsawin’s animated film 'My Friend the Green Horse'; and Christopher Auchter’s documentary 'The Stand,' drawing on archival material from the Haida Nation. The NFB is also releasing 'Parade: Queer Acts of Love & Resistance,' spotlighting Canada’s 2SLGBTQI+ movement. Accompanying these premieres, the NFB will provide access to over 460 Indigenous-made works and special blog content on Nunavut’s animation history and Indigenous activist cinema. On June 14, seven short films will be released to honour 2025 Governor General’s Performing Arts Awards laureates, available on multiple streaming platforms. These initiatives signal continued support for Indigenous and LGBTQ+ storytelling in Canadian media.

CRTC Publishes New Broadcasting Applications and Indigenous Radio Decisions

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) listed several new applications and decisions in Canada Gazette, Part I, Volume 159, Number 23. Applications include North Superior Broadcasting Ltd. (CFNO-FM-1, Nipigon and Red Rock, Ontario), Cogeco Media Inc. (CHPR-FM, Hawkesbury, Ontario), Arsenal Media Inc. (CFVM-FM, Amqui, Quebec), and Mondo Globo Inc. (LBCI, across Canada). Notably, the CRTC issued Decision 2025-118, approving an Indigenous FM radio station for Northern Native Broadcasting in Vancouver, and Decision 2025-121 supporting a French-language community FM station for the Association des francophones du Nunavut in Iqaluit. Access Communications also received decisions for distribution undertakings in Regina and White City, Saskatchewan. The intervention deadlines for several applications extend through late June 2025.

Parks Canada Invests $16.5M in Tulita District Cultural Centre and Office

Parks Canada has allocated $16.5 million for a new office and cultural centre for the Nááts'įhch'oh National Park Reserve in Tulita, Northwest Territories. Announced by Minister Rebecca Alty on June 6, the investment supports the Impact and Benefit Plan for the region, providing both operational headquarters and cultural exhibition space. The centre will be a gathering place for Dene and Métis community members, facilitate visitor engagement, and serve as a base for Parks Canada staff. Estonian Arts Centre Receives $1.6 Million for KESKUS International Estonian Centre in Toronto

The Government of Canada has committed over $1.6 million to the Estonian Arts Centre for the construction of a green roof at the KESKUS International Estonian Centre in Toronto. Cultural Sector Indicators Show Continued Economic Growth in 2023
