Celebrating Five Years of Indigenous-led Child and Family Services Law

The Minister of Indigenous Services, Patty Hajdu, commemorated the five-year mark of the Indigenous-led Child and Family Services Law, which came into effect on January 1, 2020. This legislation, known as Bill C-92, allows First Nations, Inuit, and Métis the jurisdiction over child and family services. Since its inception, 10 coordination agreements have been signed, including the first Inuit agreement, and $251 million in capacity-building funding has been allocated. The Supreme Court of Canada upheld the law's constitutional validity in February 2024. The Act aims to address the disproportionate number of Indigenous children in care and is a step towards reconciliation.
